Problems With Uploads - [2012-05-12 23:50:29] - Rob Chet
Seems like the weekend has been good for you guys!

If you have been experiencing issues whilst uploading flights recently it is likely to be a browser issue,

1) If the "next/right" arrow does nothing after choosing submit with igc or coordinates then please clear your cache and try again. Fixed, the problem was caused by some browsers automatically checking the igc button, this was not expected. The button is now always checked by default and should avoid any further problems.

2) If you can get to the spinning circle and it says "flight was flown over a month ago" then please update your browser. The spinning circle of stuff SHOULD now be replaced by an error message if the browser is not supported rather than just spinning endlessly and causing confusion. I have been unable to get any of my browsers to reproduce the error so I am working blind on this.

3) If another problem occurs I have broken it completely, please send me an angry email explaining how I am a fool along with any details about the issue.

I have checked all the latest builds of all the major browsers under windows (IE, Chrome, FireFox and Opera) but there will be some combinations I have missed (For example I have no idea if any of it works on Macs or mobile devices).

Once I have some free time I will try and make it more compatible again but for now exams are priority.
BOS Round 1 - [2012-05-10 01:12:24] - Rob Chet
Well done to everyone taking part in the first round of this years BOS.

All of the results are now on the system including the combined comp tracks!

If there are any mistakes with gliders/clubs/scores please inform us.

Looking forward to round 2!
BOS Task 1 - [2012-05-06 03:05:30] - Rob Chet
BOS Task 1 flights have been added to the database and the comp tracks generated. Well done to Grant for getting to goal. Task maps are available by going to Comps -> BOS 2012 / Task 1.

Scores are calculated by a different system to the comps score so positions may vary.

If your score seems quite off or we have associated you with the wrong club / glider please tell Phil and it will be changed - I used the last submitted flight as a reference for everyone as we comps team don't keep a record of club.

Fingers crossed the weather is good for the next couple of days!

Rob
Super Sunday bug fixes and updates - [2012-04-18 23:44:42] - Rob Chett
A very well done to Carl Walbank on his record breaking flight, still Neville is still holding the top spot in the league for open distance with the larger dog-leg and trip out to sea before landing.
Congrats also to Tim King on a rather large defined out and return, putting him in a respectable 4th place all-time.
Hopefully we will get a few more flights in from the day and some more days like it as well!

Bug Fixes-------------
Firefox and IE were not sending form data after asking for confirm for the last few days so if you entered a flight and got a never ending spinning circle of doom could you please enter it again.

Updates---------------
Flight uploads will now keep you informed about progress, if the circle of doom has no text in it then something has gone wrong with upload, if the circle of doom has stalled for a prolonged period of time please tell us the stage it has got up to.

There is also now the option to forgo triangle scoring if you believe it will not be a high score, this can dramatically improve the performance of the score calculator. We are constantly trying to improve the speed but accuracy must always come before speed
New Functions - [2012-04-13 21:44:18] - Rob Chett
After the loss of the the forums when I re wrote the site I have replaces them with a semi-instant chat thingy-ma-do-da. Hopefully you can use this for the same things as the old forum. Messages can be annonymous if you wish all we ask is that it is kept clean and legal. Next, if it seems resonable I will add the ability to comment on flights.

New Tables Page - [2011-11-01 21:18:56] - Rob Chett
So, if you have looked at the tables page recently you should have noticed it has changed a bit. The most notable thing is it will now attempt to merge 3 different function into one page.

Obviously it is still used to view the tables, this part will always be visible and depending on the size of your screen you will be able to change the table with either the old `basic` setting (for narrow screens, or the `advanced` settings found previously on the Custom Tables page.

You should also see a map on the left, unless you have a very narrow screen, which can be used to overlay the traces for any flights in the tables. To do this click the flight you wish to add and a box will appear with the flight details, including a button to add the flight.

If you can`t see all the sections but want to press ctrl+ - (control and minus keys) to zoom out. This will unfortunately make text smaller too.

If you don`t like this view please tell us why and you can continue to use the old version by using the link at the top of the page.
Changes To The Site - [2011-10-31 14:30:08] - Rob Chett
There will be a few changes to the site starting on the 1st of December.

1) ALL flights will require a 3D trace.

After much talk we have been persuaded to change the rules of the league to allow only flights submitted with a trace that supports 3D coordinates as of the 1st December 2011. This is to create a fairer, policable competition for the new season. We are aware that not everyone owns a 3D enabled device, however the majority do, for the 2011 season 370 flights had a supporting trace while only 66 were manual entries - some of which came from pilots we know own a supported device.

2) Pilots will be able to roughly check their flights for airspace.

After you have entered your flight details and clicked submit a few more pages will appear depending on the details of your flight, the first page that may appear is choosing the section of the flight you wish to submit. This will happen if your gps trace has a gap of more then 60 seconds between two points. This is to allow the system to detect defects in traces caused by gpss being left on after landing or the like, which could unfairly increase a score. Unfortunately this could also happen if a gps looses signal mid flight so we can be lenient if your bring it to our attention. You can view the parts on a map by clicking a link on the page.
After choosing a part if necessary you will then be asked to choose the type of flight you wish to submit out of Open Distance, Out and Return or Triangle. The scores of each are shown with multipliers so you can choose the best for you. This page also contains a link to view your flight with an airspace overlay, while it is not perfect it will give you an idea and if need be you can use software such as SeeYou to properly check.

3) New system to upload competition flights.

After entering the BOS and CAC flights I thought it would be good for competition organisers to enter the flights for their comps. The system requires nothing more than a zip containing all the igcs and the details from compGPS. It will plot all the flights on a single map and allow you to enter then into the database.

4) Load multiple flights onto a map.

The tables have been modified to allow you to plot any flights you wish onto a map single, the old view for the tables still exists but I hope to move to the new form if there are no issues with it being like it is.
Viewer Update - [2011-07-07 01:32:05] - Rob Chett
You can now use the flight viewer (found by clicking a score an then choosing 'view in google maps') with any browser with javascript support. You can control the track by either dragging the blue slider found at the bottom of the map or by pressing the 'play' button also found at the bottom. This update also effects the comp viewer.

Rob
Comp Tracks update - [2011-07-04 22:41:36] - Rob Chett
The comp tracks now show the task and can be 'played' allowing you to pay more attention to what is actually happening and not what you are scrolling, i recommend values of 333/500/1000 for number of cycles for smooth tracks and 0.1 seconds between cycles.

Next thing I will be working on is making it easier to distinguish the pilots in a gaggle.

I will have a bit of time on my hands these next few weeks so if anyone has suggestions for the site they will be more than welcome.
BOS 2011 Round 3 part 3 - [2011-07-04 17:14:40] - Rob Chett
The last task can be found here, congratulations to the 4? guys who made goal, some impressive flying and it was nice to see you come in from the camp site. Commiserations to Graham Phipps who fell ~200m short of goal. Official results can be found on the BHGC site.
BOS 2011 Round 3 part 2 - [2011-06-30 23:53:08] - Rob Chett
Close call on the first to goal, Paul Harvey made a good call and beat Tim King to the post. 6 people made goal in the end so congratulations.
BOS 2011 Round 3 part 1 - [2011-06-30 00:01:51] - Rob Chett
So task one is over, load of messing in the score room and we can release the results for the UKNXCL part. The actual BOS is being a little more of a pain ! You can see the maps here, the results are of course in the usual place.
Basic Handicapping - [2011-06-07 14:06:58] - Rob Chett
Using the Custom Select form you can now apply handicaps on Class and Kingposts. The multipliers stack so a 0.5 multi on Class 5 and a 0.8 on kingpost will give a 0.4 multi on rigid and kingpostless gliders. Use a multi of 0 to exclude that type. The multiplier for the flight will be displayed next to in in the table.
for example Handicap Test, 2010 with 0.8 on class 5

Rob
All of BOS ROund 2 - [2011-06-03 02:11:29] - Rob Chett
All of BOS Round 2 has been added, you can see the flights combined for each task here http://www.uknxcl.co.uk/comps. the results will be available at goal some point soon
Tables - [2011-05-31 14:33:13] - Rob Chett
"Glider Mode" (a check box option) will display the tables with gliders as the main focus instead of pilot. The Club league will also swap to "manufacturers league". Thought someone somewhere might like to see.

Rob
BOS 2011 Round 2 - [2011-05-28 15:03:24] - Rob Chett
First day done, and flights added, you can see the group trace here or download the kml so you can see it in 3d (using google earth) from here. The official results can be found at Goal

In case you haven't seen the, the other comps BOS round 1, BOS round 1 club class
Change to the glider select - [2011-05-27 19:55:18] - Rob Chett
Added manufacturer info to the glider drop down to (hopefully) make it easier to find your glider., if I couldn't find a manufacturer on the internet it will be marked with 0 - glider name. If you spot a mistake or can name the unnamed then please do so here.

Rob
Custom Leagues - [2011-05-27 17:44:56] - Rob Chett
If you wish to make a custom league then download these two files pilot database and glider database and edit them with a new column, for the gliders put in the multiplier they will recieve (ie 0 if they are not allowed, 1 for normal score) and for each pilot a 1 or 0 if they are allowed in the league or not, or alternatly the multiplier they should recieve.
If you send them to me along with any additional things you would like in the league (including a name for the league) I will see what I can sort out. Once I have one custom league up and running I will attempt to create an admin interface so you can skip me out entirly and organise them yourself.

OIf anyone has knowlage of a hg database with info on each glider I could allow you to create a "formula" from this info to create the glider handicaps automatically as well.

Rob
New Users, working again - [2011-05-22 18:30:19] - Rob Chett
I had broken the new user form when storing emails in an encrypted form, this has now been fixed.

The people who had tried to create users but and then been unable to log in will need to re-create their account, sorry about that.
New Option for Tables - [2011-05-18 00:42:38] - Rob Chett
Due to recent discussions about the validity of certain tracks without altitude measurements we have made a table which will only display flights submitted with a valid 3d log, each flight must be vetted by a member of the admin team before it will be shown on this table.

Out of 237 flights with a supporting log, only 31 were 2d logs.

For the remained of this season we have no intention of limiting flights to only 3d logs. As of next season however the official table MAY be redefined to only contain such flights and 2d logs with no chance of airspace infringement. If this is the case then an 'unofficial' league will still be available with the current criteria for flights.

Of course, if any flight this season is found to be within airspace it will be removed.
Defined Flight Notification - [2011-05-11 15:47:07] - phil chett
To Qualify for defined Goal/OR/Triangle you will need to text Your name and co-ords to 07747885677. You can change your mind as often as conditions change, just as long as the text is sent before take off.

With the exception of BOS Goal flights no defined flights will be accepted without text notification
Trace follow added - [2011-05-06 21:03:02] - Rob Chett
When looking at a track with our google maps system you can now follow the flight by moving the slider at the bottom of the page.
A vertical line will also travel across the height map to show the relative progression through the flight. If the slider and the red line are not aligned that is because the igc has not got constant time steps, the height graph maps height against time from first point while the slider is for each point not time.
BOS 2011 Round 1 Task 1 - [2011-05-05 14:05:25] - Rob Chett
We have now uploaded the tracks from the BOS.
Right now I am working on improving the viewing system to allow all the flights from a comp task to be displayed together and followed through time. Hopefully this will be interesting to people.
BOS 2011 Round 1 - [2011-05-04 00:34:59] - Rob Chett
The first round is over. After 4 days with winds too high to fly a lot of people had gone home but for the 35 people who stayed there was a great flying day to enjoy. The goal for the main league was set to ~85k with around 13 people making it, Grant Crossingham coming in first of the flexwings. For the club guys there was a ~35k goal which 4 guys made, Daniel Balla winning that and going on to fly a 87k flight! Congratulation to everyone who flew and may the next round bring you more luck with the weather.
Rules Changed. - [2011-05-04 00:07:21] - Rob Chett
Very little has actually been edited, so I will give you a brief rundown on them.
  • The number of waypoints allowed in an out and return flight has been changed from 5 to 4. That is a start, 1 or two turn point(s) and a finish within 800m of the start.
That is all.

these changes have been made as they better match the results given by GPS Dump which means everyone is on a level playing field no matter if they submit a track or not. The old rules, allowing 3 turn points, were originally lifted from the old NXCL site but was only used for 4 flights without supporting tracks. On another note the rules do allow for out and returns with 2 turn points and these are supplied from gps dump as the largest of either triangle or flat triangle however with a 3x multiplier triangles will always be optimal being submitted as a triangle.

We hope this is acceptable to most if not all of you but if you have any doubts we are open to discussion.
New users - [2011-04-27 22:51:24] - Rob Chett
Thanks to Andy Harden (sorry about possible spelling error) for pointing out the new user isn't working. This has now been fixed.
To all of you who had usernames in the previous incarnation they will no longer work as we can't recover these from wikidot.
Thanks again and hopefully we will have no more teething issues.
Rob Chett.
New Site - [2011-04-26 23:43:20] - Rob Chett
Changes:
  • The login and forms are now linked. If you register it will allow you to have you pilot, glider and club filled out when you go to submit a flight, saving you a few precious seconds.
  • We now require an IGC along with the KML file. This is so we can check airspace with ease to stop a few people complaining. We are working on making out own KMLs so only IGC is required.
  • Custom tables, allowing you to make your own with the database, will make a separate threat to discuss this.
  • We now have a section to let you add some extra info for your flight if you wish too along with private info for the admins. You can also delay publication until we look at / edit part of your flight as per your request.
  • Flights which will not count towards the UK league (i.e. flown outside the UK) can now be entered and will show in your pilot log.
Little things like the tables layout, flight page layout have been messed with.

We aren't perfect so please use the forum if anything is amiss.

The UK National XC League aims to encourage competition by enabling pilots to compete nationally against all comers in a manner that is fun whilst, at the same time, promoting safe and responsible flying.

Eligibility

  • Only flights that originate within the geographic boundaries of the United Kingdom of Great Britain will be accepted for the league. Provided that, at no time during a flight are the rules governing controlled and/or restricted airspace contravened and local rules regarding access and use of takeoff and landing sites are not infringed.
  • Flights outside the UK will be accepted for personal logs only and will not show on any official tables. Such flights must be accompanied by a flight log.
  • Pilots are allowed 2 flights under club rating with relevant supervision to be entered into the system, anyone with a Pilot rating can enter as many flights as they wish.

Season Dates
